EN Wisdom: Component Substitution Risk -> EN certification applies to the tested configuration. Substituting actuators, cabling, or control panels outside the tested scope invalidates compliance. Certification is only as strong as the integrity of every component in the chain.

Episode 1 in this series: When a tender specifies EN 12101, what exactly are you getting?

Across the industry, we see increasing confusion around what constitutes true EN 12101 compliance. This isn’t unique to South Africa, but it’s particularly pressing here as tenders reference EN standards more often. Some know it. Some don’t. And some are deliberately exploiting the confusion.

Exposé: Whether static or automated, smoke and fire curtains are being sold into projects under the guise of EN compliance – the certificates often cite different standards altogether, such as EN 16034, or carry no EN testing at all. Others lean on the false security blanket of SANS Part T, pitched as ‘equivalent’ to EN. It isn’t. Never has been.

Reality check: The EN 12101 family is precise, harmonised, and still valid in its 2005/2006 versions for smoke barriers (EN 12101-1). These require full CE marking, DoPs, Factory Production Control, and NANDO-listed Notified Body oversight. Anything less is a misrepresentation, however loudly it is marketed.

Market manipulation: Some market practices unintentionally compromise safety – from modifying products on site to relying on outdated certificates. These gaps can be closed through clearer guidance and stronger alignment with EN 12101. The result? A smokescreen of paperwork, stitched together as loosely as the curtains themselves.

The proof: Contrary to claims that EN 12101 is “no longer valid” for curtains, products such as Colt’s SmokeMaster SM5 remain fully certified under EN 12101-1 with harmonised EU approval. The certification is current, traceable, and transparent.

Insurance reality check: Insurers are not fooled by paperwork stitched together to look like EN compliance. Outdated or unverified certificates will not stand in claims court. Liability flows directly to developers, contractors, and specifiers who chose to ignore transparent EN traceability.

The bottom line: Projects demanding EN 12101 compliance should not settle for less. The industry has a choice: keep turning a blind eye to misrepresentation, or demand documented, transparent compliance. There is no grey zone.

Closing strike: In fire safety, clarity saves lives. By working together to remove the smoke and mirrors, we can build safer projects, stronger partnerships, and lasting trust.

CALL TO ACTION : IC Colt urges developers, consultants, and regulators:

  • Demand valid DoPs, Form 3s, and Factory Production Control audit proof.
  • Reject vague claims of “EN-equivalent” compliance.
  • Recognise that safety cannot be stitched together.

EN WISDOM: EN 12101-1:2005/A1:2006 remains the harmonised norm in the EU. Valid CE marking, DoPs, and Factory Production Control audits are required. Outdated or unverified certificates cannot withstand insurance or regulatory scrutiny.
